As one of the "Four Major Motor Racing Events in the World" alongside F1, MotoGP, and WRC, the 2024 World Motocross Championship (MXGP) will take place in Shanghai at the Shanghai International Off-Road Circuit from September 14th to 16th. This marks the event's return to China after its debut in Shanghai in 2019.
On July 18th, a press conference for the event was held at the World Guesthouse. During the conference, it was highlighted that MXGP is one of the highest-level, most influential, and most popular motorcycle racing events in the world. This year's championship began on March 10th in Argentina and will conclude on September 29th in Spain. The Shanghai round is the penultimate event and a crucial showdown for riders vying for the annual championship title.
The event will attract 32 teams and over 70 riders from more than 20 countries and regions, competing in three categories: MXGP (450cc), MX2 (250cc), and the Junior Class (85cc). The MXGP category will feature world-renowned riders such as five-time world champion Tim Gajser from Slovenia, French national team captain Romain Febvre with one world championship, two world runner-ups, and four national championships, three-time world champion and young Spanish rider Jorge Prado, and five-time world champion Jeffrey Herlings from the Netherlands, known as the "Bullet" on the track.
Shanghai Track
The MXGP China Shanghai round will be held at the Shanghai International Off-Road Circuit in Fengxian District. This venue, built specifically for the MXGP China round, features the only motocross track in China that meets the international FIM standards. The track is approximately 2000 meters long with 16 slopes, the highest being 4.5 meters and the largest span being 60 meters.
Wang Chun, Deputy Mayor of Fengxian District, explained that the track is shaped like the Chinese character "贤" (wise), incorporating a traditional Chinese stone archway. This design reflects the "Wise Culture" of Fengxian, welcoming off-road motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world to experience the blend of speed, passion, and traditional culture in Fengxian.
The event coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the organizers will host a grand carnival themed "Watch the Race, Explore Fengxian." The festivities will include stunt motorcycle performances, electronic music shows, Shanghai intangible cultural heritage displays, "Haiguo Night Market," and "Meigu Meigo Fun Fairs" throughout the event. The MXGP China Shanghai round aims to integrate sports, culture, tourism, commerce, and exhibitions, serving as a window for international exchange and a bridge to showcase Shanghai's unique charm to the world, supporting Shanghai's goal to become a globally renowned sports city.
Tickets for the event went on sale at 18:18 on July 18th.
